  1.      Automation certainly assumes the servomechanism and 
  2. the computer. That is to say, it assumes electricity as store 
  3. and expediter of information. These traits of store, or 
  4. ‚Äúmemory,‚Äù and accelerator are the basic features of any 
  5. medium of communication whatever. In the case of electricity, 
  6. it is not corporeal substance that is stored or moved, but 
  7. perception and information. As for technological acceleration, it 
  8. now approaches the speed of light. All nonelectric media had 
  9. merely hastened things a bit. The wheel, the road, the ship, the 
  10. airplane, and even the space rocket are utterly lacking in the 
  11. character of instant movement. Is it strange, then, that 
  12. electricity should confer on all previous human organization a 
  13. completely new character? The very toil of man now becomes a 
  14. kind of enlightenment. As unfallen Adam in the Garden of Eden 
  15. was appointed the task of the contemplation and naming of 
  16. creatures, so with automation. We have now only to name and
